Inspiring leaders, activists and actresses, including Michelle Obama, Nicole Kidman and Emma Watson, have already shown their support by wearing this sparkling symbol of empowerment.
What inspired you to create Shiffon Co.?
I truly believe jewellery can really create a more beautiful and supportive world for women. I started brainstorming how this supportive world for women could exist when I realised the margins in fine jewellery were high and that retailers were taking a large cut resulting in high markups. That inspired me to want to use the margins in jewellery to invest in female entrepreneurs. I also figured if we could go direct to consumer, we could pass on the savings for the customer as well. At Shiffon, we donate 50% of profits from our Duet Pinky Rings to the Startup Girl Foundation (our nonprofit VC arm) that invests in female founders and companies empowering women. So far we have invested in more than ten incredible companies helping women.
Do you believe that jewellery can unite and empower women?
Yes! I think jewellery is such a strong form of self-expression. I also think fine jewellery and pieces worn on the day-to-day can be strong daily symbols and reminders to us of what we believe in. Even better is when the jewellery does something impactful in the world. That’s something I really wanted to do with Shiffon. I also love that women can collect jewellery from past generations and that all these pieces tell a unique story. It’s almost like we get to wear a little bit of history with hand-me-down jewellery from family and I think that can unite many women together across generations.
